The 10 Best iOS Health and Medical Apps
Trying to find the best apps on the iTunes store can be extremely challenging. You can search, sort by category and list by most popular, but unless you know exactly what you are searching for, none of these filters does a very good job of surfacing the absolute best apps.
Although “best” is debatable, most people know when they are looking at an app that it is truly head and shoulders above the rest. For example, when you’re looking at an app, and it has thousands of 5 star reviews, very few 1 star reviews, and the negative reviews are typically related to personal experiences that probably don’t apply to most other people, it’s probably a very good app. Also, these apps are regularly updated and either free or fairly priced. Finally, these apps either have an abundance of features or simply do a small number of things extremely well.
The apps included in this list are from the iOS store’s “medical” or “health and fitness” categories, but it excludes fitness only apps, because that deserves its own category. Women’s health and pregnancy apps have a disproportionate share of this list, simply because there are more good apps in this category than the rest. However, with only a few exceptions that were basically unavoidable, the list includes only one app in each of the medical and healthcare areas that currently offer great apps.
Without further ado, here is the list (in no particular order):

- Most recent critical reviews:
- August 7, 2016: 1 star- User bought Fitbit app, Strava and the WebMD app at the same time to better track health and exercise. However, although “WebMD advertises that their app can sync data from Fitbit” the sync only worked for about a week and hasn’t worked since. Support has been slow in responding and no resolution has been found, nor is there any indication that it will be.
- July 6, 2016: 1 star- “Does not work with Fitbit Charge HR.” User was able to get it to work for a while by specifying Fitbit Flex, but it stopped syncing and still isn’t working. Also stated that “support is apparently nonexistent.”
- July 5, 2016: 1 star- “When linking to FitBit, I was given a warning that ‘HTTPS is not being used to protect this data’, and when I clicked anyway, I get a javascript error which makes me wonder where my data actually went. Trying to link to walgreens redirects you to striiv, but does not at all make clear what the relationship is, and visiting striiv’s page did little to clear this up. Uninstalling and changing passwords to any accounts I allowed WebMD to have access to quickly.”
- June 21, 2016: 1 star- User downloaded the app to track their various physicians’ information in one place, but despite being able to look up physicians, they found no way to save them or add them to a favorites list.
- June 8, 2016: 1 star- App crashes all the time and says it needs an Internet connection even when the phone is connected to the Internet.
- Most common complaints:
- Most of the complaints are focused on poor Fitbit integration and the lack of more frequent updates (as of August 19, 2016 the last update was January 19, 2016)

- Description & Features:
- This is the stop smoking app that science built. Over 20 different, evidence-based, techniques to help you become – and stay – smoke free. See how much money you’ve saved, how many cigarettes you’ve not smoked, how long you’ve been smoke free, how much life you’ve regained and how your health is improving.
- Log your cravings, get tips on dealing with them, use the map to see where they congregate, the notes to see what patterns can be identified and the graph to see how they’re decreasing.
- All this is free to use and entirely free of ads. If you need extra help giving up smoking our missions could be just what you need, as they’ve been proven to double your chances of quitting. No other app can promise you this.
- We proved the missions worked by performing a rigorous scientific experiment. As far as we know, this is the first ever randomised control trial run entirely within an app. Its success means we want to run many more and our goal is to constantly make our app more effective
- This is all entirely voluntary and you can download the app without taking part in the experiment. Your data will be kept anonymous and you can delete it at any time. But we really hope you do take part because everyone who does will help the quitters who follow. So do yourself a favour by quitting smoking. - August 18, 2016: 5 stars- “Smoked about a pack every day and a half for the past three year, after quitting once for two….I didn’t want to stop but was lately have been feeling extra exhausted and then scared by how out of breath and how bad my lungs hurt after attempting a HIIT workout. I’m on my 4th day. Day 3 was horrible, and if I didn’t have this app I know from experience I would have 100% cracked. You give up your best friend when you quick and this app is literally that- a really great, encouraging friend, there to talk you trough (sp) cravings and send you up to the minute progress reports. It’s also a super easy and cool way to share your progress and journey with loved ones. Every time I want a cigarette I send my mom or boyfriend the up to minute progress page and their responses are always super supportive which really helps. Still discovering more of the app, there’s really so much! Highly, highly recommend this for anyone that just quite or wants to. A real lung-saver!”
- August 17, 2016: 5 star- “Helps remind me every day”
- August 16, 2016: 5 star- This avid smoker just downloaded the app, and will start in the morning. Eager to earn badges and says it looks promising. Wishes the app had an “I smoked” button showing negative health effects and some badges that relate to the health bars.
- August 16, 2016: 5 star- “This app is super motivating if you’re ready to quit. Not only does it show you all your heath benefits but it’s basically a little life coach in an app. I’ve been recommending the crap out of this app and use it everyday. It’s been 20 days since my last smoke and I feel great.”
- August 16, 2016: 5 star- “It has helped me and motivated me to stay off the cigs.”
- Most recent critical reviews:
- July 1, 2016: 2 star- “This app is ok for trying to quit smoking, but it is a RIP OFF. They trick you into spending $5 for almost ZERO change. Almost nothing is different than the free portion of the app. It’s wrong and plain not fair! Seems like they care more about taking money than helping people quit smoking honestly!! I’m very frustrated”
- June 25, 2016: 3 star- Says it’s alright but not impressed because you have to pay for everything. “It’s like one big advertisement”
- June 5, 2016: 1 star- “Paid for upgrade immediately. Only giving a star because zero stars isn’t an option. Doesn’t update progress if you slip & smoke. Free apps offer better”
- June 1, 2016: 1 star- “This used to be a great app. Then they decided making money was more important than helping people, so they locked up most of the features. Unless you want to spend $5, get a different app.
- Most common complaints:
- Vast majority of the complaints related to the $5 charge for the Pro version. Either they don’t think it’s worth the fee or are upset that there is a fee at all.
