MetroFax: In-Depth

Back to MetroFax Overview and Comparison

MetroFax: Washington Startup becomes j2 Global Subsidiary

MetroFax was founded in 1997 in Bellevue, Washington, and was acquired by j2 Global in March of 2013. j2 continues to offer MetroFax’s original service plans and pricing as well as the company’s high quality smartphone apps, but transitioned the web platform to mirror it’s flagship brand, eFax. The service’s plans, smartphone apps and high quality customer service make it one of the top brands on the market.

MetroFax’s Primary Services

MetroFax Essential: MetroFax includes 500 send/receive pages with their Essential plan and allows people to either pay $7.95 per month or $79.50 per year, which equates to two months of free service. This plan gives users full access to MetroFax’s services, including their high quality iPhone and Android apps. These apps essentially transform a smartphone into a fax machine, buy using the camera as a scanner and faxing the images directly through the app. People with both MetroFax and Dropbox apps on their phone can fax documents by opening them in Dropbox then selecting the option to open them with MetroFax. Local numbers are typically available in all 50 states. MetroFax also offers toll free numbers for no additional charge. MetroFax accounts allow up to five email accounts to send and receive faxes, which can be very helpful when multiple people are sharing the same fax number. MetroFax offers US based phone support Monday through Friday from 8am to 9pm Eastern Time as well as email support. Online chat is available for sales but not for customer support.

None of MetroFax’s small business plans offer HIPAA compliance, so this is not a good service for medical professionals. Also, MetroFax doesn’t offer e-signatures, so people looking for a service that allows them to sign faxes without having to print them first need to look at other options.

MetroFax Value: This plan offer is identical to MetroFax’s Essential plan, but it doubles the monthly page allotment from 500 to 1,000 for $12.95 per month or $129.50 per year. MetroFax charges $.03 per page used in excess of the plans’s monthly allotment (eg: for Essential, over 500 pages; for Value, over 1,000 pages), so for people expecing to use between 667 and 1,460 pages per month on average, the Value plan is the best option.

MetroFax Professional: The MetroFax Professional Plan offers identical features to Essential and Value, but increases the monthly page allowance to 2,500 for $35.95 per month or $$359.50 per year. For anyone expecting to use 1,460 to 2,500 pages per month, this is MetroFax’s best option. For people needing higher volume, MetroFax provides custom quotes for their Corporate accounts. Because MetroFax is now owned by j2 Global, these quotes will be for corporate service with their flagship product, eFax. Read more about these services on the eFax: In-Depth section on FindAFax.
