j2 Global Overview

You may not have heard of j2 Global, but you’ve almost certainly heard of some of the brands it owns. The publicly traded company owns some of the top names in the cloud-based communications and virtual pbx industries.

The company was founded by Jaye Muller and Jack Rieley in 1995 as JFax. Its name changed to j2 Global Communications, Inc. in 2000 and then to j2 Global in 2011 as it expanded from phone-centric services into other services, including online fax. Since 2005, j2 has absorbed more than 13 fax brands, including eFax and MetroFax. The company also added a digital media division in 2012.

Included in j2’s Business Cloud Services segment are Internet fax, virtual phone, hosted email, email marketing, and online backup offerings under brand names that include eFax – j2’s flagship online fax – eVoice, FuseMail, Campaigner, KeepItSafe, and Onebox. Other online fax companies acquired by j2 include MyFax, MetroFax, TrustFax, CallWave, RapidFax, Send2Fax, and Fax.com.

In the last quarter of 2014, j2 closed eight acquisitions, seven of them for its Cloud Services Division. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and has 1,130 employees.

eFax has about 11 million customers worldwide – it is available in 49 countries on six continents, and offers local numbers in 4,100 cities.

Its two primary levels of service are eFax Plus and eFax Pro, with a third, eFax Corporate, for larger businesses. Click here to learn more about eFax and its features.
