Battle of j2 Global’s Top Online Fax Services

MetroFax, MyFax and eFax are three of the most popular online fax services on the market. One thing that most people don’t realize, however, is that all three of these companies are owned by j2 Global, and they are all currently supported by identical platforms, apps and customer service. However, they do have significant differences in pricing and capabilities. Here is a closer look at how the three companies compare.

MetroFax

MetroFax offers a good combination of pricing and features. While all three services offer an iPhone app, only MetroFax and it’s more expensive sister brand, eFax, offer Android apps. MetroFax has three plans:

  • Essential: 500 pages for $7.95 per month or $79.50 per year;
  • Value: 1,000 pages for $12.95 per month or $129.50 per year; and
  • Professional: 2,500 total pages for $35. 95 per month or $359.50 per year.

Another benefit offered by MetroFax is their extremely low $.03/ page overage charge. This is less than 1/3 of what eFax and MyFax charge. MetroFax also allows their customers to add up to ten users per account (MyFax and eFax are limited to five).

For most customers, MetroFax offers the best pricing of the three options, but it is missing a few capabilities offered to eFax subscribers. Unlike eFax, MetroFax does not offer eSigning or an option for HIPAA-compliance. However, if those things aren’t important, MetroFax is a great option.

eFax

eFax includes more features than the other services, but it’s also considerably more expensive. The brand offers two plans:

  • Plus: 150 inbound & 150 outbound pages for $16.95 per month, or $169.50 per year. They also charge a $10 setup fee unless you signup through one of FaxCompare’s “30 Day Free Trial” of “visit website” links; and
  • Pro: 200 inbound & 200 outbound pages for $19.95 per month, or $199.50 per year. They also charge a $19.95 setup fee.

eFax offers all the features of MetroFax, but it also includes eSigning and HIPAA compliance (although they will not sign a Business Assoicate Agreement). As noted in our eFax review, the company also offers Microsoft Integration, and is the only company to offer all of these features in a single service. However, it is a more expensive plan with fewer and segregated incoming and outgoing allotted monthly fax pages, so it is better suited to businesses that need those features. One thing to note about eFax, is that the company offers a range of custom products for larger businesses. These services are custom quoted and significantly more expensive.

MyFax

MyFax has three plans, but, because of the special pricing offered to people using links on FaxCompare, only one option is worth considering.

  • Special “Best Value” FaxCompare Offer: 400 inbound & 400 outbound pages for $10.00 per month, or $110.00 per year. You must signup through one of FaxCompare’s “30 Day Free Trial” of “visit website” links to get this deal.
  • “Standard” Best Value: 100 inbound & 200 outbound pages for $10.00 per month, or $110.00 per year;
  • Most Popular: 200 inbound & 200 outbound pages for $10.00 per month; and
  • Fax More: 400 inbound & 400 outbound pages for $10.00 per month.

MyFax offers the same iPhone app as MetroFax and eFax, but it is the only service of the three to offer a Blackberry app. Unforutnatley, the Blackberry app hasn’t been updated since 2010. Because it is so similar to MetroFax, MyFax is best suited to people who see specific value in the special $10 per month, 400/400 pages fax offer through FaxCompare.
